"For the past 6 months or so, people have spoken about the Valve Anti-Cheat version 2 with great expectation and excitement. Lately its been announced that its going to be very effective, but the truth is different. It needs more work!
Valve takes many precautions in their anti-cheat department, which leaves alot of people with nothing else then trying to figure it out themselves. They are notoriously silent about their system, and the argument that it would only give cheaters indications that will help them crack it could be valid, but its not. Cheat-developers almost knows more about the VAC system then Valve themselves, and keeping information will leave to nothing but faint rumours and peoples wild imagination. This means that steambans.com hasn’t been able to retrieve factual information on the system, but we have done some research.
First, we established that changes came in the system along side the announcement that VAC2 beta will arrive soon. There was changes in server modules that suggested a rather significant change in parts that haven’t been changed in a long while (VAC - core hasn’t been changed since steam platform was initiated). Secondly reports that on selected servers, mainly CS:S servers people were forced to download additional information before connecting. Additional downloads that they were not required to do elsewhere on source servers, and downloads that most definatly wasnt due to custom content.
That led us to establish that VAC2 beta was in fact launched on selected servers, which common denominators were high rate of people playing all the time. They were popular servers. When this was established we turned our head towards the place where you can get the most precise information on VAC, the cheat-development scene. And the word was there, from a source that we consider very reliable, that yes the beta was launched on selected servers, and yes it had some structural changes to it, but no it wasn’t the GENERATIONAL changes that many of us had hoped it to be.
If that wasnt the only thing, the information provided to us, was that not only was the changes kept to the minimum, but also has it also already been cracked, and VAC2 proof cheats are being made as your reading this news. We have found no actual indication that VAC2 BETA is running on any other servers then source servers at this time, VAC2 isnt engine specific, so it can be easily implemented to other mods etc at a later time.
Steambans has chosen to air this information because we want to stop the rumours that VAC2 will be the end of cheaters, its the stone wall of Valve that create all these out of proportion rumours, and secondly we want to PLEAD to Valve to try better, and try harder.
Its still in BETA stage, changes can still come about that makes a difference. Its not too late to start living up to the expectations that you have set forward in your announcements of the new generation of Valves Anti-Cheat.
You got to remember Valve, that it more then anything else defines what you are
willing to do for your serving community, contra what you are willing to do to get new customers. At this present time there’s a great difference in what you are willing to do to get new customers as to what your willing to do for the existing ones. Please even out the difference and give us an anti-cheat tool you and we can be proud of!
